About the Artist

After years as a professional calligrapher as well as a teacher of art and calligraphy, I am now deeply grateful and happy to be focusing on painting.

My calligraphy clients included Williams College, the Clark Art Institute, Bennington College, and many other institutions and individuals.  I made large illustrated and gilded pieces as well as addressing envelopes for special events.  This practice gave me many of the skills that I have today.

I taught adults, college students, and children calligraphy, painting, and drawing.  Each group had its own joys and challenges.  I still have the pleasure of teaching an ongoing class of long-time students who have become friends.

And, in order to make ends meet, most of the time I had a part time job as well.  Time to work on my own art was limited and precious.

I painted with oils for many years, never expecting to do anything else, until I took a break after completing a challenging series of paintings, and I’ve worked with watercolor ever since. I love the depth of color that the transparency of watercolor affords, and the remarkable light reflected through it from the white paper.

Making art is hard, sometimes frustrating, full of wonder at what can happen on a flat piece of paper, and joy when I make something beautiful.
